Darren jumped at the chance to be part of The Great Bike Hike
when asked if he would be interested in cycling to Broome next
Blind since birth, Darren prefers the word disadvantaged to
disabled and has never let his own disadvantage get in the way of
being involved in anything and everything that he can.
Darren has been involved in blind sports and athletics since
1982, and tandem cycling since 1983 when he began riding with his
father. At the time, Darren and his father were the only
father and son team in Australia, and they competed in races all
around Australia, including the National Blind Games in Ballarat in
1987 when they won Gold in the road race. Darren also won
second overall in 1994 in the National Blind Tandem Cycling
Championships in Darwin.
Waterskiing, golfing, ten-pin bowling and
Dragon Boat Racing also keep Darren fit and active.
Darren's most memorable occasion was to join other community
torchbearers, taking a turn in carrying the torch for the 2000
summer Olympic Games in Sydney.
It's not just sport though. Darren also plays the keyboard
and belongs to
Catch Music, a music group made up of musicians with and
without a disability where he sings and "jams" regularly. He
is considering how he might be able to bring music with him on The
Great Bike Hike, as he feels that music really does bring people
together, and that's what The Great Bike Hike and Count Me In are
Darren has completed a reflexology course and currently attends
the Swan Districts Football Club on a Thursday training day where
he is being supported by a mentor to up-skill himself in the art of
reflexology. The Swans players have welcomed Darren and look
forward to him practising his skills, caring for their feet.
Darren has also received Rock Tape (sports taping) training, so he
will be part of the physical therapy and support team on the
Naturally, Darren rides with a partner on a tandem cycle.
It's not yet been finalised who will be riding with Darren on The
Great Bike Hike, but there are a couple of people who are keen to
be involved, including his sister Tanya. Training begins now,
so getting in shape by next August is not going to be a
