About New Norcia

Follow your nose as you approach the town of New Norcia along the Great Northern Highway… and you will find the source of the most delicious aroma - BREAD! This town contains a bakery, and its product is legendary!

A Spanish Benedictine monk, Rosendo Salvado, established a Catholic mission on the Victorian Plains in the 1840s and called it New Norcia. The town was named after the monk's birthplace in Italy and his aim was to gather local Aboriginal children and educate them.

The town's Spanish heritage is reflected in its architecture (classified by the National Trust), and Benedictine monks are still actively involved in the town's enterprises of tourism and the arts.
