About the Coorow Community

About Coorow

The town of Coorow was established in 1893, and the name Coorow is said to be derived from the Aboriginal name of a nearby spring.  The meaning of the name may be from the word 'Curro', which is the local Aboriginal word for a variety of Portulaca, or another source gives it as 'many mists'.

Coorow shares in the abundance of spring wildflowers enjoyed by many towns along the Great Eastern Highway north-east of Perth and the Alexander Morrison National Park just out of town, puts on spectacular displays each year. 

An interesting piece of knowledge is that horses raised on an earlier settled homestead in the area were shipped to Singapore where they were used by the British forces in World War I.
